After receiving his diploma from the Scuola di Teatro di Bologna (Theater studies), Alberto Vendemmiati graduated from the University of Bologna in Spettacolo e Comunicazione (Performing Arts and Communication) and in 1994 he received his diploma in directing from the National School of Cinema (Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia) in Rome.
His film shorts of that period, in which he explored the limits between fiction and documentary, were screened at international festivals. In 1996, he established Quadra Image, the film company with which he made "Cadabra", a feature length film inspired by the poetry and figure of Cesare Zavattini, a father of Italian neorealism.
In 1998 he shot "Crucifige" and "Le Voci Fuori" (broadcast by RAI3) with Fabrizio Lazzaretti, exploring the theme of mental disorder. Vendemmiati co-produced and co-directed, together with Lazzaretti, "JUNG (War) in the Land of Mujaheddin" of which he was also operator and sound recordist. The film, made in Afghanistan in 1999 and 2000 with Gino Strada of Emergency, was screened and received awards at numerous festivals world-wide, including the Venice Film Festival, IDFA (International Documentary Filmfestival of Amsterdam), and the Human Rights Watch Film Festival of New York. It was broadcast world-wide as well as distributed theatrically in the USA. Their second documentary "Afghanistan, Collateral Damage?" made in 2001 and 2002 and coproduced with the American PBS, represents the continuation of that experience following the events of 9/11. Of this last film he was also editor.
In 2003 he followed the World Music band Agricantus through southern Italy and Syria shooting the music documentary "Agricantus in Tour", which explores cultural exchange in the Mediterranean, under financing by the European Community.
Vendemmiati has been making "The Person De Leo N." for the last five years as producer, director, camera operator and editor.
