Gianni Celati is a writer, translator and literary critic. His first novel, "Comiche" (Comedies), was published in 1970 by Einaudi, which subsequently also published his "Le avventure del Guizzardi" (Guizzardi's Adventures) (1972), "La banda dei Sospiri" (Group of Sighs) (1974) and "Lunario del paradiso" (Paradise's Almanac) (1978). After many years teaching abroad, he returned to Italy in and in 1983 Feltrinelli pubished his book of short stories "Narratori delle pianure" (Voices from the Plains). Next came "Quattro novelle sulle apparenze" (Appearences) (1986) and "Verso la foce" (Towards the Mouth) (1988), an itinerary towards the mouth of the Po river, where the author spent his childhood and youth. In 2005 he was awarded the Campiello prize for "Fata Morgana," receiving the Viareggio award the following year for "Vite di pascolanti". Celati is still active as a translator of both English and French. In 2003 he was the main character in Davide Ferrario's documentary film "Mondonuovo" (New World City), set in the lands of the author's childhood, running along the Po river from the province of Reggio Emilia all the way to the sea. In 2007 he received the Calepino Lifetime Acheivement Award.
